A HISTORY STEEPED IN INDUSTRY
Saint John’s story is one of firsts.
As Canada’s first incorporated city, Saint John established itself early on as a strategic centre for trade and defence in Acadia. By the late 1800s, Saint John had earned a global reputation as a shipbuilding powerhouse, launching world-famous vessels like the Marco Polo and driving innovation on the world stage.
From hosting Canada’s first labour union to pioneering inventions like the automated steam foghorn, Saint John has always been a city of makers and problem-solvers. These achievements laid the foundation for today’s dynamic industrial community—a region that continues to set the standard for excellence, connectivity, and opportunity.
Fast forward to the present, Saint John is now home to Canada’s largest oil refinery, a large industrial barge facility, dry dock, and so much more. A true industrial centre of excellence, Saint John is also part of a blue and green revolution. Wind power projects are in progress and the city is situated in a province which gets much of its energy from blue and green sources.
